The Alliance for Peace, Justice, and Human Rights (APJHR) warmly welcomes President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s renewal of Executive Order No. 131, now officially Executive Order No. 148, reaffirming his government’s commitment to the establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia.
This bold and timely action signals a renewed era of justice, accountability, and national reconciliation. By empowering the Office for the Establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court (OWECC-L), now under the capable leadership of Dr. Cllr. Jallah A. Barbu, the President is turning long-standing calls for justice into tangible steps forward.
At APJHR, we view this decision as a significant milestone. For years, survivors, victims’ families, civil society actors, and Liberia’s international partners have called for an end to impunity. The reissuance of this Executive Order shows that those calls are being heard.
“The path to peace is paved with justice—and today, Liberia has taken another bold step forward.”
This renewed commitment not only honors the memory of the many who suffered during Liberia’s civil conflicts, but also lays the groundwork for a future where human rights are protected, and leaders are held accountable.
We commend President Boakai for his courage and leadership, and we urge all branches of government, civil society, and citizens to rally behind this renewed pursuit of transitional justice and lasting peace.
